Counselling, as defined by the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (2011), is a “relational process based upon the ethical use of specific professional competencies to facilitate human change. Counselling addresses wellness, relationships, personal growth, career development, mental health, and psychological illness or distress. The counselling process is characterized by the application of recognized cognitive, affective, expressive, somatic, spiritual, developmental, behavioural, learning, and systemic principles.”
Counselling can help clients process past, present, or future events, emotions, and relationships while building skills to address how to move through these challenges using a client's own strengths. By speaking with an unbiased and nonjudgmental person, clients can begin to discover their own inner abilities and capabilities. Counselling sessions can be for individual, couple, or family work. It is a very collaborative process where a counsellor and a client work together to discover a course of treatment that wil be more effective and beneficial for the client.
